Understanding HMO Medical Groups

When enrolling in an HMO, it's important to verify more than just whether a doctor accepts the insurance carrier. You should also confirm that your Primary Care Physician (PCP), specialists, and preferred hospital are affiliated with the same medical group whenever possible.

Many consumers are surprised to learn that a specialist may participate in the health plan but not be affiliated with their PCP's medical group. In those situations, obtaining a referral to that specialist may be difficult or impossible. That's why we review not only the carrier and plan, but also the medical group relationships that determine how care is coordinated.

Why Doctor Networks Matter

Not every doctor accepts every health insurance plan. Even if a physician accepts a carrier such as Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Health Net, or Molina, they may not participate in every network offered by that carrier.

Most Individual & Family Plans, whether purchased through Covered California or directly from the carrier, utilize the same provider networks. However, PPO plans offered through employers often have broader provider networks than Individual & Family PPO plans. As a result, a doctor who participates in an employer-sponsored PPO network may not necessarily participate in the Individual & Family version of that plan.
