Individual & Family Plan (IFP) Open Enrollment & Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Open Enrollment is the time of year when individuals and families can apply for medical insurance either directly through an insurance carrier or through Covered California, which acts as a marketplace connecting consumers to participating carriers. Open Enrollment typically runs from November through January each year. Benefit Packages is a Certified Insurance Agent for CoveredCA and we can help you determine whether you would qualify for APTC (Advanced Premium Tax Credits) which will directly reduce your premium.

Outside of Open Enrollment, you may still qualify for coverage through a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you experience certain qualifying life events. In most cases, you must apply within 60 days of the qualifying event. Individuals losing Medi-Cal coverage may have up to 90 days to enroll.  Dental insurance is available all year round without restrictions.

Common SEP Qualifying Events for Medical Insurance Include:

  • Loss of employer-sponsored health insurance
  • COBRA coverage exhausted
  • Loss of student health insurance eligibility
  • Turning age 19 and no longer qualifying for a child-only plan
  • Turning age 26 and losing coverage under a parent’s health plan
  • Moving to California from another state, or moving within California and gaining access to at least one new Covered California health plan
  • Birth, adoption, or placement of a child into foster care (may allow the entire family to enroll)
  • Change in household size
  • Domestic abuse or spousal abandonment
  • Return from active military service
  • Gaining U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status
  • Natural or human-caused disasters
  • Release from jail or prison
  • Already enrolled through Covered California and becoming newly eligible for tax credits or cost-sharing reductions
  • Already enrolled through Covered California and losing dependent status due to divorce, legal separation, dissolution of a domestic partnership, or death
