The Affordable Care Act (frequently referred to as “Obamacare”) has resulted in the addition of many no-cost services in women’s health care.  In August health insurance plans were required to add eight new benefits in addition to 14 other benefits that had already been added.

The new benefits come at no addition cost to women, and include:

  • Contraception, including FDA-approved contraception, sterilization procedures and patient education and counseling.
  • Breastfeeding support and counseling, plus access to breastfeeding supplies for pregnant and nursing women
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening and counseling for sexually active women
  • Gestational diabetes screening for women 24 to 28 pregnant or those at high risk of developing gestational diabetes
  • Human  papillomavirus DNA test, plus testing every three years for women 30 or older with normal test results
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) counseling for sexually active women
  • Domestic and interpersonal violence screening and counseling
  • Well-woman visits for women under 65
