Does My Doctor Accept
My Medicare Plan?
One of the most important questions when choosing Medicare coverage is whether your doctor, medical group, hospital, and prescriptions are covered by your plan. The answer depends on whether you choose a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or a Medicare Advantage (MA/MAPD) plan.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans
- You can see any provider nationwide who accepts Original Medicare.
- You generally do not need to worry whether your doctor is contracted
with a specific insurance carrier because Medicare is primary. - What matters most is whether the provider accepts Original Medicare
and whether they accept Medicare assignment, depending on the
Medicare Supplement plan you choose. - Medicare Supplements are often popular with people who want maximum provider flexibility and predictable out-of-pocket costs.
Medicare Advantage Plans (MA/MAPD)
Most Medicare Advantage Plans use HMO provider networks. This typically means:
- You select a Primary Care Physician (PCP)
- Your PCP belongs to a contracted medical group
- Specialist referrals are usually required within the same medical group network
Choosing the right Medicare Advantage Plan is important because provider networks, prescription drug formularies, copayments, and benefits vary by plan and county. Many Medicare Advantage Plans contract with multiple medical groups, giving you the flexibility to change your PCP and/or medical group during the year.
