Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are a great option for those who want both the freedom to choose their providers and the predictability of limited out-of-pocket costs.
With a Supplement:
- You can see any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare
- You don’t need to worry about whether your doctor is contracted with a specific insurance carrier
- The only thing that matters is whether the provider accepts Original Medicare, since Medicare remains your primary coverage
Provider Access & Excess Charges
In an effort to encourage broader provider participation, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) allows certain providers to charge up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount. These are known as Part B excess charges.
If you want access to these providers without being responsible for those additional charges, it is generally recommended to consider:
Plan G
- Covers Part B excess charges
- Offers comprehensive protection against out-of-pocket costs
Plan F vs. Plan G
Plan F also covers excess charges, but:
- It is only available to individuals who were eligible for Medicare prior to January 1, 2020
For those currently enrolled in Plan F, we often recommend reviewing a switch to Plan G because:
- The only difference is that Plan G does not cover the annual Part B deductible
- The 2026 Part B deductible is $283
- In many cases, the premium savings with Plan G exceed the deductible

* Plans F and G also offer a high-deductible plan in some states. You must pay Medicare-covered costs (coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles) up to the deductible amount of $2,950 in 2026 before your policy pays anything. You can’t buy Plans C and F if you were new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 (page 75).
** For Plans K and L, after you meet your out-of-pocket yearly limit and your yearly Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), the Medigap plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year.
*** Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance. You must pay a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in an inpatient admission.

In California, you may be able to switch plans without answering health questions under the “Birthday Rule” (guaranteed issue provision).
Important: Prescription Drug Coverage
Medicare and Medicare Supplements do not include prescription drug coverage.
Most people also enroll in a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) to ensure their medications are covered.
